Salinity and stable oxygen isotope relationship in the Southwestern Atlantic: constraints to paleoclimate reconstructions Anais da ABC (AABC)
BELEM,ANDRE L.; CARICCHIO,CAMILLA; ALBUQUERQUE,ANA LUIZA S.; VENANCIO,IGOR M.; ZUCCHI,MARIA DO R.; SANTOS,TARCIO HENRIQUE R. DOS; ALVAREZ,YACI GALLO.
Abstract: Stable isotopes have been widely used in the literature both to discuss current ocean circulation processes, as well as to reconstitute paleoceanographic parameters. The distribution of oxygen and deuterium stable isotopes in seawater (δ18Osw and δDsw) at the Western Tropical South Atlantic border was investigated to better understand the main fractionation processes of these isotopes and establish a regional salinity and δ18Osw relation to improve the paleoceanographic knowledge in the region. This study was conducted during a quasi-synoptic oceanographic cruise in which 98 discrete seawater samples were collected in the core of the main water masses for stable isotope analysis. A strong correlation between δ18Osw and δD was found, which made it...

Seagrass organic matter transfer in Posidonia oceanica macrophytodetritus accumulations ArchiMer
Remy, François; Mascart, Thibaut; De Troch, Marleen; Michel, Loic; Lepoint, Gilles.
Seagrass ecosystems are net autotrophic systems which contribute to organic carbon burial in marine sediment. Dead seagrass leaves are often exported outside the seagrass beds and may form accumulations (exported macrophytodetritus accumulations, hereafter EMAs) from littoral zones to deepest canyons. Understanding how seagrass organic matter is channeled in its associated trophic web is necessary to assess the role of the seagrass ecosystem as blue carbon service providers. We used gut content and stable isotope analyses to delineate the Posidonia oceanica EMA food web structure and to determine the importance of detrital material in the diets of macrofauna. Evidence from gut contents and stable isotopes showed that this food web is fuelled mainly by two...

Seasonal and plant-part isotopic and biochemical variation in Posidonia oceanica ArchiMer
Cresson, Pierre; Boudouresque, Charles François; Ruitton, Sandrine; Casalot, Laurie; Verlaque, Marc; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille.
Posidonia oceanica is an iconic and highly productive Mediterranean seagrass. As most studies have focused on the fate of its production, temporal and plant part-specific variations of isotopic composition and biochemical content were overlooked. Combined seasonal and plant-part stable isotope composition and biochemical concentrations were measured at the lower depth limit of a P. oceanica meadow (~ 25 meter depth), and explained on the basis of previous knowledge of the specific metabolic functioning of each part. The predominance of compounds with complex chemical structure was reflected by the high concentrations of insoluble carbohydrates, high C/N ratios and high ä13C values. Plant parts clustered in 3 groups with similar isotopic or biochemical...

Seasonal dependence on seagrass detritus and trophic niche partitioning in four copepod eco-morphotypes ArchiMer
Mascart, Thibaud; De Troch, Marleen; Remy, François; Michel, Loic; Lepoint, Gilles.
Benthic copepods dominate meiofaunal communities from marine phytodetritus, both in terms of numerical abundance and species diversity. Nevertheless, ecological factors driving copepod co-existence and population dynamics are still largely unknown. Here, we aimed to explore feeding habits of four copepod species commonly found in Mediterranean seagrass detritus accumulations, representing distinct eco-morphotypes (planktonic, phytal, epibenthic and mesopsammic). Joint use of fatty acid and stable isotope trophic markers showed that co-occurring harpacticoid copepods have diversified diets. Contrary to what was expected, microphytobenthos does not serve as their main food source. Instead, we found evidence from both techniques that major food items include...

Small-scale spatial variability of food partitioning between cultivated oysters and associated suspension-feeding species, as revealed by stable isotopes ArchiMer
Dubois, Stanislas; Orvain, Francis; Marin Leal, Julio César; Ropert, Michel; Lefebvre, Sébastien.
Oyster culture structures support a host of epibionts belonging to the same suspension-feeding guild, which are considered to be potential competitors for food with cultivated oysters. In an intertidal shellfish ecosystem on the northern French coast, an approach based on stable isotopes (C-13 and N-15) was used to investigate intra- and interspecific food resource partitioning among cultivated oysters and the main associated wild sessile epibionts such as polychaetes, barnacles, mussels and ascidians. The main objective of the present study was to determine inter- and intraspecific food partitioning, along with small-scale spatial variability, within the guild of suspension feeders. We demonstrated that interspecific competition was limited among...

Sources of organic matter for flatfish juveniles in coastal and estuarine nursery grounds: A meta-analysis for the common sole (Solea solea) in contrasted systems of Western Europe ArchiMer
Le Pape, Olivier; Moderan, J.; Beaunee, G.; Riera, Pascal; Nicolas, Delphine; Savoye, N.; Harmelin-vivien, M.; Darnaude, A. M.; Brind'Amour, Anik; Le Bris, H.; Cabral, H.; Vinagre, C.; Pasquaud, S.; Franca, S.; Kostecki, Caroline.
Coastal and estuarine nursery grounds are essential habitats for sustaining flatfish stocks since only these shallow and productive areas provide the high food supply that allows maximizing juvenile growth and survival in most flatfish species. However, the main organic matter sources at the basis of benthic food webs might differ drastically between estuarine nursery grounds under strong freshwater influences, where food webs are mainly supported by continental organic matter, and coastal ecosystems under limited freshwater influence, where the local marine primary production is the main source of carbon for the benthos. To better understand the links between continental inputs to the coastal zone and stock maintenance in the highly prized common sole,...

Spatial analysis of the trophic interactions between two juvenile fish species and their preys along a coastal-estuarine gradient ArchiMer
Kopp, Dorothee; Le Bris, Herve; Grimaud, Lucille; Nerot, Caroline; Brind'Amour, Anik.
Coastal and estuarine systems provide nursery grounds for many marine fish species. Their productivity has been correlated with terrigeneous inputs entering the coastal-estuarine benthic food web, thereby favouring the establishment of fish juveniles. Studies in these ecosystems often describe the nursery as a single large habitat without verifying nor considering the presence of contiguous habitats. Our study aimed at identifying different habitats based on macrozoobenthic communities and morpho-sedimentary characteristics and assessing the trophic interactions between fish juveniles and their benthic preys within these habitats. It included 43 sampling sites covering 5 habitats in which we described taxonomically and quantitatively the invertebrates and...

Spatial and temporal variations in food web structure from newly-opened habitat at hydrothermal vents ArchiMer
Gaudron, Sylvie Marylene; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Jorge, Amandine Nunes; Gaill, Francoise; Pradillon, Florence.
To highlight the spatio-temporal variability of the food web structure of hydrothermal vent fauna from newly-opened habitat, a series of Titanium Ring for Alvinellid Colonization devices (TRACs) was deployed at TICA site on the East Pacific Rise in 2006. This experiment was conducted for periods of 4 days, 13 days and one month and deployments were aligned along a gradient from the basaltic bottom to the vent openings. delta C-13 values of colonists revealed a narrower range of carbon sources in proximity to vent openings in Alvinella pompejana habitat than in Tevnia jerichonana habitat, separated by a distance of four meters. This was possibly due to a spatial change in available food sources with a possible higher contribution of particulate organic...

Spatial distribution and nutritional requirements of the endosymbiont-bearing bivalve Loripes lacteus (sensu Poli, 1791) in a Mediterranean Nanozostera noltii (Hornemann) meadow ArchiMer
Rossi, Francesca; Colao, Elodie; Jose Martinez, Maria; Klein, Judith C.; Carcaillet, Frederique; Callier, Myriam; De Wit, Rutger; Caro, Audrey.
Sulphur-oxidising endosymbiont-bearing bivalves often inhabit seagrass meadows, where they can control sulphide levels and variably contribute to carbon cycling, by feeding on endosymbiotic bacteria and/or on particulate organic matter from the water column. The patterns of variability in their feeding mode and their spatial distribution within the seagrass meadows are however poorly studied. Seagrass beds form naturally patchy habitats with seagrass-sand edges that may have variable effects on different organisms. The present study aims at understanding differences in feeding mode and abundance of the endosymbiont-bearing bivalve Loripes lacteus (sensu Poli, 1791) as well as the physiological conditions of its endosymbiotic populations between edge and...

Spatial variation in the stable isotopes of 13C and 15N and trophic position of Leporinus friderici (Characiformes, Anostomidae) in Corumbá Reservoir, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Pereira,Alexandre L.; Benedito,Evanilde; Sakuragui,Cássia M..
Stable isotopes of carbon (delta13C) and nitrogen (delta15N) were used to describe sources of energy and trophic position for adult Leporinus friderici in the area of the Corumbá Reservoir, Brazil. Samples were collected from April 1999 to March 2000. Spatial variations were not identified in the isotopic composition. The maximum and minimum contribution of C4 plants calculated integrating the variation of plants and fish were 47.7% and 2.4%, respectively. Among C3 plants, periphyton presented closer isotopic values to those observed for fishes, corresponding to an important carbon source. The proportion of ingested plant item is larger in rivers upstream from the reservoir (42.7%), which justifies the smaller trophic level among there. However, in the...

Spatio-temporal variation in diet may affect condition and abundance of juvenile European hake in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Ferraton, Franck; Harmelin Vivien, Mireille; Mellon-duval, Capucine; Souplet, Arnauld.
Variations in space and time of juvenile hake diet (5 to 19 cm total length, TL) were investigated in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) and related to variation in C and N stable isotope ratios, condition and abundance. Crustaceans (mysids and euphausiids) dominated the diet of the smallest juvenile hake (5 to 9 cm. TL), and fishes (sardines and anchovies) of the largest juveniles (15 to 19 cm TL). The transition from a crustacean- to a fish-based diet occurred in medium-sized juveniles (10 to 14 cm TL), which preyed on both crustaceans and fishes (gobiids). These juveniles preyed on fishes when living in shallow waters (30 to 50 m), and crustaceans when located in deep waters (70 to 150 m). Although hake diet did not change over time in shallow waters...

Stable isotope analysis position of intertidal of food source and trophic nematodes and copepods ArchiMer
Rzeznik Orignac, J; Boucher, G; Fichet, Denis; Richard, P.
Four dominant nematode species and various copepods from an intertidal mudflat in Marennes-Oleron Bay were analyzed for delta C-13 and delta N-15 ratios together with their potential food source, the microphytobenthos. It was shown that microphytobenthic C is passed to nematodes either by grazing or predation on herbivorous meiofauna by other nematodes. Diatoms of different sizes exhibited different C-13 content, which can be reflected in herbivorous meiofauna, such as the nematodes Daptonema oxycerca and Metachromadora remanei and the bulk of copepods, indicating they can select different sizes of diatoms. Results confirm the need to analyze meiofauna feeding habits at the species or genera level since the delta N-15 and delta C-13 signatures differed...

Stable isotopes (C-13/C-12 and N-15/N-14) in settling organic matter of the northwestern Mediterranean Sea: biogeochemical implications ArchiMer
Kerherve, P; Minagawa, M; Heussner, S; Monaco, A.
Within the framework of the High Frequency Flux (HFF) experiment (MATER programme), time-series sediment traps have been deployed for two months on the continental slope off Marseilles to measure downward particle fluxes at a high frequency sampling rate (two and six days). Combined isotopic analyses of carbon and nitrogen have been performed on selected samples. Both isotopic tracers have been used for the first time on organic material of the Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lions) to determine the main biological sources and to address the biogeochemical processes that affected this material. Settling particles were characterised by very low values of delta N-15 (near 0 parts per thousand) and delta C-13 (near -24.5 parts per thousand) that indicate the...

Stable isotopes changes in the adductor muscle of diseased bivalve Ruditapes philippinarum ArchiMer
Dang, Cecile; De Montaudouin, X.; Savoye, N.; Caill-milly, Nathalie; Martinez, P.; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
In this article, we show how a disease could bias stable isotope analyzes of trophic networks and propose a strategy in the choice of tissues to be analyzed. In the past few years, a new pathology (brown muscle disease or BMD) affecting the posterior adductor muscle of Ruditapes philippinarum has emerged in Arcachon Bay. BMD induces a necrosis of muscle tissues which become infused by conchiolin and hence calcified. As muscle of mollusks are often used for trophic food webs studies through stable isotopic analyzes, this work investigated the effect of BMD on carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios of anterior and posterior adductor muscles of clams collected in February and August 2007. Infected clams displayed a lower condition index and a posterior adductor...

The influence of Congo River discharges in the surface and deep layers of the Gulf of Guinea ArchiMer
Vangriesheim, Annick; Pierre, C; Aminot, Alain; Metzl, N; Baurand, F; Caprais, Jean-claude.
The main feature of the Congo-Angola margin in the Gulf of Guinea is the Congo (ex-Zaire) deep-sea fan composed of a submarine canyon directly connected to the Congo River, a channel and a [sediment] lobe area. During the multi-disciplinary programme called BIOZAIRE conducted by Ifremer from 2000 to 2005, two CTD-O2 sections with discrete water column samples were performed (BIOZAIRE3 cruise: 2003-2004) to study the influence of the Congo River discharges, both in the surface layer and in the deep and near-bottom layers. The surface layer water is greatly diluted with river water that has a heavy particle load. The deep layer is affected by episodic turbidity currents that flow in the deep Congo channel and reach deep areas far from the coast. Previous...

The present study examined the influence of the availability of riparian vegetation and C3 emergent aquatic macrophytes on carbon assimilation by Prochilodus lineatus. The vegetal cover of these producers, available at 30 m of the bank, for the terrestrial ecosystem of the rivers Baia, Ivinheima and Paraná, was quantified with the image processing Landsat 5 TM, of the year 2000, period of sampling of the biological material at each river. The assimilation of the energy sources (riparian vegetation and C3 aquatic macrophytes, C4 aquatic macrophytes, periphyton, and phytoplankton) by P. lineatus was determined by analysis of stable carbon isotopes (δ13C). The area of vegetal cover was estimated at 1,017 km2 in the Ivinheima river, 669 km2 in the Paraná...

The isotope composition of inorganic Germanium in seawater and deep sea sponges ArchiMer
Guillermic, Maxence; Lalonde, Stefan; Hendry, Katharine R.; Rouxel, Olivier.
Although dissolved concentrations of germanium (Ge) and silicon (Si) in modern seawater are tightly correlated, uncertainties still exist in the modern marine Ge cycle. Germanium stable isotope systematics in marine systems should provide additional constraints on marine Ge sources and sinks, however the low concentration of Ge in seawater presents an analytical challenge for isotopic measurement. Here, we present a new method of pre-concentration of inorganic Ge from seawater which was applied to measure three Ge isotope profiles in the Southern Ocean and deep seawater from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Germanium isotopic measurements were performed on Ge amounts as low as 2.6 ng using a double-spike approach and a hydride generation system coupled to...

The nature of aquatic landscapes in the Miocene of western Amazonia: an integrated palaeontological and geochemical approach Naturalis
Wesselingh, F.P.; Kaandorp, R.J.G.; Vonhof, H.B.; Räsänen, M.E.; Renema, W.; Gingras, M..
The Miocene Pebas Formation from the section Santa Rosa de Pichana (Loreto, Peru) was investigated using a combination of analyses of sedimentary facies, molluscan communities and taphonomy, and stable isotopes of both entire shells and growth bands in bivalves. Three sequences, comprising a succession of transgressive, maximum flooding and regressive/prograding intervals, are documented. Molluscs are most common in the transgressive/highstand intervals and are almost absent in regressive/prograding intervals. The fauna is dominated by endemic Pebasian species, such as Pachydon and Dyris spp. The nature of the deposits as well as the availability of oxygen varied in a predictable way within each of the sequences and determined the nature of the...

The stony road to understand isotopic enrichment and turnover rates: insight into the metabolic part ArchiMer
Lefebvre, Sebastien; Dubois, Stanislas.
Trophic enrichment factors (TEF) are essential to properly and fruitfully explore stable isotope analysis in ecology. And so is the time window of food source integration, usually estimated with the turnover rates (lambda) of isotopic incorporation. On the road to provide ecologists with a general and reliable method to obtain TEF and turnover rates for diet reconstruction, isotopists start realizing that those two parameters are ultimately linked with the physiological state of organisms and that metabolic pathways are of primary importance to understand the large ranges in TEF values. In this study, we used a diet-switching experiment for seven small marine invertebrates. Changes in isotopic compositions were fitted to an exponential decay model to...
